Hi Dog lovers! In case anyone is interested, there are specific listservs you can find for each breed on the internet, particularly for adults with breed specific questions.
I have a 2 year old Golden Retriever who is as happy as a Disney Character. We just had a lump removed from her tail which is going to take awhile to heal.
We subscribe to an informative Golden list which you can find at www.golden-retriever.com. We also have a springer-pointer cross which we call a Sprinter. He is a sweetie. How someone could have dumped him off at a campsite is beyond me. Both our dogs are suited to my and my husband's personalities. Both dogs have begun doing flyball, a new sport for dogs which they both love. To look for info and clubs near you type in "flyball" in your favorite search engine and you'll find the NAFA homepage.
Whatever you do, please spend lots of time training and having fun with your dogs-I find them way nicer than many people. (although I like most other dog lovers too!)

1/10/98 - My first visit to PetStation and I've enjoyed reading the remarks of so many dog lovers, like myself. My husband and I have filled our "empty nest" with two miniature schnauzers, both neutered males, one 9 yrs. old, the other 2 yrs. They are loyal, loving companions and travel with us wherever we go! Would enjoy hearing from any other schnauzer owners with secrets for training them not to bark quite so much! I know, Good Luck!!!

Need information on types of dogs. Looking for a small to medium
size dog (15-40 pounds); great family dog; excellent with
children (we have a 6 year old boy); would like a dog that
could grow up with a small "active" boy; husband prefers a
dog that doesn't shed or smell; mother and children just
want a dog to love, care for, and play with. Any suggestions
on breeds. I was thinking of a small Aussie; husband is interested
in something like a "westie"; son wants a "hybrid wolf" (we've
already researched that one and have decided against the wolf).
Any suggestions/information is appreciated to make this
family complete!

Hi. I have a black mix lab "Sundy" 7 yrs. diagnosed with dejenerative joint disease, displasia. Still very active has trouble getting up and with stairs sometimes. Has any one ever heard of a product brand name called Synvisc. This is being used by many people to combat osteoarthritis in knee joints. Injected into the knee to provide cushioning and ease pain. No side effects no medication .Has this ever been used for dogs? I have Sundy on two bufferin a day + vitamin E + calcium. I'm trying to avoid rimadyn because of side effects. If anybody has heard of this or has any advise , I would be very grateful. Never had a dog before Sundy. She's the best. Thanks.

Hi everyone, I have 9 Border Collies. We are in herding and have been for several years. My oldest is 9 who is bran. He has been the best dog I have ever had. He is the catcher for my son in baseball, the guard in basketball and soccer, the guardian of the pool table, loves to lay at the pond and watch the kids fish. When my son was trying to learn to dribble the basketball we told him to try and manouver around bran if he was ever able to get around him than there would never be a boy who he couldnt get around. Found him (bran) and my son one day when bran was a lot younger sitting in a branch of the tree. I was totally shocked. Asked my son how he got him up there and he told me he took the ball and climbed up the tree and called the dog and of course bran would do anything for that ball. Enough on that I could rattle on about border collies all day. Just had a litter of puppies, 9 of them 4 boys and 5 girls. Anyone looking for a bc you can e-mail me at bran@bright.net Love to talk to anyone who wants to discuss dogs. Love these guys.

I have a 4 1/2 yr. old labrador retriever. I love her more than anything!! She's a great dog. But, she's been pretty sick lately and we don't know what's wrong w/ her. Neither does the vet. She's been sick for quite a while. These are her symptoms: lathargic, vomiting, swollen paws, weak (lies down slowly), extra thick blood, losing protien. She was on antibiotics but it didn't totally heal her. The vets think it's something chronic but, they don't know exactly what it is. I'm VERY worried! Can anyone help? Does anyone know what those symptoms could mean? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

1-8-98 HI fellow dog lovers! We lost our "SHILO" in 94' and would like to get another one. She was a "kelpie" with the smokeblue coat. A great companion and friend! The stories about the endless energy is true for this breed as atested by her great love for frizbies,balls,sticks..and a great passion for water sports! We searched quite alot recently, only to find out that there is not many breeders listed at all for the Kelpie. After 15yrs. with this breed we would like to find any info where to search in the mid-atlantic area. We are sure someone may know of a kennel or breeder that may have some leads. They are just the right size for travel and very loyal, usally ignoring other dogs unless they try to intrude on their playtime! thank you and enjoy your pets..GODBLESS..you can email us at DMOUNT7932@AOL

I don't think she will be around for much longer, but my vet reckons she will just to annoy me. She has always been healthy and well taken care of, but has gone down hill a bit in the past two years. Also, what advice does anyone have about what kinds of arrangements might be made for my dog's care when I need to travel? spends most of time inside in winter, outside in summer. don't know if spaying has anything to do with this or not, but this is first time she has had this problem. shes 2 1/2 years old.

Have 2 beagles in outdoor, heated kennel. A 6 year old boxer that lives indoors. We rescued her from a no-kill shelter in May
where she'd been for two months. They picked her up on the streets, and she'd been beaten violently. First thing we had to do with her was have surgery done to remove one eye that had been bashed beyond repair. She has come a long way
since we brought her home, and is now the most loving dog I've ever owned. She was extremely obedient from the start, so I suspect she's had training at some point in her life. She had also had puppies somewhere, sometime, before
the shelter picked her up.

We are the owners of a 3 yr. old Bernese Mt. Dog and a 2yr old Wirehaired Ptg. Griffon. They are great dogs and so pleasant to be around. They enjoy one another although at times the Berner lets the Grif know enough is enough. The berner has developed hip dysplaysia so his tolerence is lower than two yrs. ago. They have begun to growl and fight (no biting yet) We would appreciate any info on correcting this problem. We have read several articles on multiple dogs in the home and it seems we are doing what is recommended. The personalities of the two are similar, they both love being around us , their family, and seem to be more like children than dogs.

We have a 6 1/2 year old pitbull who needs surgery on her knee. They are going to replace the ligament in the knee next week. She tore it playing hard. Has anyone gone through this? Any advice? The vet tells us the recovery time is 2 months - no stairs, no going outside in the yard without being on a leash. No getting on and off the couch! She is to be "quiet" for two months so it heals properly. Will this be possible? Is it as bad as it sounds?

We have a chocolate lab. I have a weird question about him, his name is Tucker Brown. My husband and I have had dogs all our lives and have never come across this problem.
When he gets nervous, he releases a very bad odor and starts to clean himself. We have no explanation. He's 3 years old and is in perfect health other wise. Does anyone have any explanation for this. He tends to do this while riding in the car and it is very repulsive.

I HAVE 2 FULL-BLOODED, REGISTERED ALASKEN MALAMUTES. ONE IS A FEMALE AND THE OTHER A MALE. THE MALE WEIGHS OVER 100 POUNDS AND CLEANS HISELF LIKE HE'S A CAT. HE CAN'T STAND MUD OR ANYTHING THAT WOULD GET HIM DIRTY. HE'S VERY SMART. HE STARES YOU IN THE EYES AND ACTS LIKE HE KNOWS WHAT YOU'RE THINKING. IF HE WASN'T SO BIG I WOULD HAVE HIM STAY IN THE HOUSE. HE LOVES CHILDREN AND NEW FACES. HE HAS A HUGE FLUFFY TAIL AND COAT EVEN IN THE SUMMER. WE USUALLY GO WALKING DOWN THE STREET, BUT HE WANTED TO STAY WITH THE NEIGHBORS KIDS AND PLAY. HE WOULD SEE THEM AND TAKE OFF, DRAGGING ME ACROSS THE YARD WITH SKID MARKS TRAILING BEHIND. MY BROTHER AND I USED HIM AS A STUD DOG UNTIL WE GOT US A FEMALE. SHE'S ALWAYS HAPPY, VERY SMART, AND LOVES FOR YOU TO SCRATCH HER BEHIND THE EARS. SHE LOVES TO LEAN ON YOU UNTIL YOU CAN BARELY STAND UP. SHE KNOWS HOW TO SPEAK, SIT, AND SHAKE. WE TOOK HER TO OBEDIENCE SCHOOL, BUT THAT WAS ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO. SHE'S ABOUT 8 OR 9 YEARS OLD SO SHE'S A LITTLE BIT RUSTY.

We have a 3 year old male Bernese Mt. Dog and a 2 year old Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. The two dogs have gotten along very well until about one month ago. When we feed them or they are sitting with us in the living room, one begins to growl which causes the other to do the same. It escalates into a teeth showing, growling fight which we break up immediately sending the one who started to growl first into the dog crate. It is presenting a problem that we do not know how to solve. If someone can suggest something to end this fighting we would be grateful. We aren't sure if what we are doing is the proper way to handle this problem.

We just got a 1 1/2-2 year old Border Collie from the shelter and it is a great dog. But we live in the city and work all day. We do not have the heart to leave her out in the snow all day, but were not sure if it's good for her to in the house 8 hours a day, just her and the cat. We didn't think it would be a problem until we saw her energy level. She's all wound up. Will she be alright in a clean, safe garage which is out of the wind and cold during the day? Also, as she gets older will she slow down...at all? And how much older so that we old folks can keep up with her. We do not have a fenced yard, we put on a 40' run and she is attended to when out. Is that ok or cruel? If we are being bad parents, we may have to take her back to the Humane Society. Don't want to, she's a real smart dog. Just having a hard time fitting her into our lifestyle, wife thinks we made a big mistake. Comments?

I am looking for a wedding present for my brother-in-law : a Scottish Terrior in the Spokane, WA area. If you have any information or any hints, I would greatly appreciate them.

I have 2 outside dogs in a pen next to one side of our house. We have had heavy tick infestations and regular 2-wk pest control during summer. Sometimes the ticks come in the house on the side they share the pen. We dip the dogs on the same day as the pest control. It is now winter here in Arizona and we have ticks still since we don't get a hard freeze to hard winter to kill them. The kennel has a dirt floor. HELP! Is there anything more we can do?

URGENT!! I need help! My six year old German Shepherd (Bitch) is suffering from ASCITIS for the last three months. The symptoms are swollen belly with water, vomiting (infrequent). I have been giving her a liver stimulant injection (3 for 3 days) and giving her Amlycure DS Syrup three times a day. To expel the water from her belly, I am giving her Lasix tablet thrice a day. In spite of these medications, her belly is still swollen . I am really worried about her condition. Please send any info/advice.

Friends of mine have an Akita, that the landlord has asked them to get renters insurance to cover injury to people or property by the dog. Insurance companies have informed them that renters insurance doesn't cover Akitas because of their notoriety as attack dogs. Please repond with information regarding insurance that would cover protecting property and people in case the dog bites someone.

I have two 2 and 1/2 year old dogs. Jake is a pure choc lab & Maggie is a greyhound & retriever mix. maggie was adopted and has turned out to be a fabulous girl. My little boy is a terror. He's full of it 24hours a day. Do these labs ever get tired? Jake weighs 120lbs. Does any one out there have a lab this big? For as big as he is he runs pretty good. They both go running twice a week and he keeps up with Maggie. He goes to the beach or the park almost every day and I can't get him to lose any weigh. I worry about his future health. I just started the jogging a month ago but as of yet have not seen any results. Is it too early to start him on a light dog food and will it affect the other dog. I really don't want to have to keep to different dog foods. Appreciate any suggestions.

I have a Shepherd/Husky mix, but not sure what else is in the mix. He is now 6yrs old, 180lbs, double or triple fur and stands about 6' on his hind legs. He is mostly black, with tan and white. Has a fluffy white tail, tan and black legs and husky head. Do not know what else he is, but he also has webbed feet, which are quite large. Is a big teddy bear and loves the water. Could he be part Newfoundland? The length of his body seem shorter than a Newfoundland, but he is wider and I think a little taller. I do have a picture of him lying down in the snow, as he loves the cold weather. When it sleets, rains, etc., it just sits on his outer coat and underneath is nice and warm. The black fur is his overcoat and underneath is tan and white. Would really like to know what else he is. Loves to play and just be with me. Would love to be in the house, but of course, much too big and too much fur. Grooming him takes forever, if you know what I mean. Have never seen a mix like this and when I walk him, the little kids want to ride him. He is bigger than your miniature ponys. Just thought I would ask and see if anyone could help me out. Would love to hear from you. Thanks, Judy Allen.

"White Shepard needs loving home with lots of land. We adopted Sabbath 4
years ago when he was abandoned by his former family in Texas. We
believe Sabbath is about 7 years old. Sabbath is a very affectionate
family pet who loves attention. Unfortunately, Sabbath has running in
the woods, swimming in streams, and chasing squirrels in his blood. We
have tried everything to contain Sabbath on our quarter-acre lot, but
nothing will hold him in. We have now had to resort to chaining him at
almost all times, which is no life for a dog who desires to spend his
days running through fields. After one too many trips to the pound,
tickets from the dog officer, and saturdays spent repairing our fence, we
have finally, painfully, decided that Sabbath must go. Please, if you
have room -- on your land and in your hearts -- adopt this wonderfully
sweet dog. Though we would appreciate any inquiry, we cannot in good
conscience give Sabbath to a family that hopes to contain him in a fenced
yard or plans to keep him on a leash. He really needs space to wander.
If he doesn't have it, he and you will both be very unhappy. Our
deadline for saying goodbye to Sabbath is the end of January. Please
respond soon if you think you can help.

I have a 5mth old Doberman that I can't stand! What am I interested in? Trading someone for a smaller, cute, 1/2 way trained dog! I have been able to train my puppy the basics, ex: sit, come, no, go pee (outside of course :-) ) and down. So what's the problem? Down. She knows it, yet she continually jumps on anything she can and is highly active, not to mention that she will jump on anything she can to get something for her own personal destruction. The bad thing is, she knows that it's "bad", she has plenty of toys, chewies, etc. but it just doesn't seem to be enough for her. She is kept in the kitchen where someone usually is the biggest part of the day, so she gets alot of attention. She will bark excessively if she is put in her kennel outside and we've tried putting her in it since she was only 6wks old! I don't get it. She gets attention, can't possibly be bored, has toys, what's the problem here? I get tired of hearing the same old training methods that I have already tried, taught, and yet go ignored unless she feels like obeying. She is very defiant and I just don't know how much longer I can tolerate this. I have a small 8 yr old who is continually knocked down and scratched badly in the face from the dog jumping. This just isn't typical behavior of a Doberman. They are generally well behaved, protective, loving family pets that are eager to please. I'm begging you! Please help me to NOT hate my dog!

I have a 20 month old Rottweiller named Remington. He is my 2nd Rotty. My 1st dog Kodiak was all you could ask for in a dog. Lovable, smart, protective, affectionate, loyal and obedient. Remington, however, is a strange dog. He did not respond well to group or private training. He is lovable but really weird. For instance, he never greets anyone when they enter the house, never wags his tail(stump) doesn't bark when the bell rings or if someone knocks. He is obsessed with light and shadows. He will follow any beam of light or shadow in the house, the car and at my work. He doesn't cower if you yell at him, he doesn't come if you call him, he would respond after the 3rd or 4th command. I think he might be retarded. His latest kick is guarding my personal possessions. At business I hang up a large ring of keys on the wall in my office. He will stand guard and will attack anyone who comes near the keys. This behavior came on quite suddenly about 2 months ago. He now protects? my briefcase, my jacket, my work boots when I remove them at home. The major problem is when my 3 young nephews are over the house he is all playful and freindly until they come near my stuff. He is very verbal and aggressive. He has not bitten anyone YET. I don't want to give him up, but I can't be worried all the time. We also have a baby on the way.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We are retired, and would love to travel more, but with older pets, it is not always desirable to put them in a kennel for that long a period of time. I am particularly interestedin the Central orange county area of So. Calif.

I have a 6yr. old german shepard/collie mix who is male and has been neutered. The problem that I am having with him is that he is a fear biter. The dog does not live with me. My mother is the one who takes care of him, however, because of his nature she is very nervous around him(which he senses) and is not consistent with his training. I love the dog dearly and do not want to put him to sleep if there is a alternative way to try to correct this problem. I guess what I need help with is locating a reputable dog training in the state of Ohio who can take the dog out of the home to retrain. I sure would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

We have 2 dogs: a 2-year-old pitbull mix we adopted from a shelter, named Sitka and a 16-year old Dachshund we sort of inherited from a relative, named Maxwell. They are so funny, Max certainly "wears the pants" in the family. Sitka won't even begin eating her meals until Max starts his. She is also afraid of our younger cat who doesn't like anyone anyway except the older cat of the house. We love them all so much. And we think that PetStation is wonderful!

Hi,
Please settle an argument that's been festering for
some time between my husband and myself. We
have a three year old Chow Chow. I feed
her NutraMax, dry and dog bisquits. Occasionally I
will give her a treat from the table, but not often. My
husband insists on giving her meat bones when
I'm not looking. He says that dogs have been
eating bones for years with no harmful effects.
Some feedback please.

My family recently adopted a sheltie mix from the Humane Society here and I have a question about training. I have been trying to get her to fetch for me for a long time now but she keeps thinking that it is a game, she runs away when I try to retrieve it for her. I have tried treats and all kinds of techniques, read books, but she doesn't seem to catch on. She can do any other trick I teach her to do (so far speak, sit, roll over, lay, heel,). Any suggestions?

I just wanted to tell about my 3 dogs. They are incredible and keep me jumping from morning till night. In order of appearance they are: Josie, a Doxie, Cocker mix (with who knows what all thrown in). We acquired her for the price of a jeans jacket. We were willing to pay real money but the previous owners declined and so I felt compelled to give something, and since the dog seemed to mean the most to a teenage boy in the household, I got him a jeans jacket. Josie was about a year old, maybe more when I met her. My husband and I had started a small business in one of those bays that you rent out. She lived next door at a citrus nursery and was terriblly neglected. Tied out during the day in the hot sun with no water. I rescued her from this dilemma several times and would bring her to our small air conditioned office while I was there. The owners went to Germany during the summer and she ran away. Several weeks later the citrus nursery owner saw a picture and lost dog alert. He retrieved her from some people who had her for several weeks but couldn't keep her as she was a biter.
To make a long story short, she came home with me on week=ends and I became so attached that I could not leave her and asked if I could have her. The owners did not hesitate and would not accept money. Hence, the Jeans jacket. Josie is now around 14 years old and she is the ruler of this houshold. I also have a Doberman and a JR. She puts them both in their place. Her eyesight is failing and she is slowing down but she is the best low maintenance dog I have ever had. Oh yeh, and she doesn't bite anymore. She was just scared and needed lots of love. I hope Josie lives many more years. She is a great traveler and when we go places she doesn't require pit stops and never gets down from the back seat. This dog is so special and I am so lucky to have known her and glad I could make her life better. She certainly has enhanced mine...........!

I have two one year old Male Danes(brothers) that are the light of my life. They keep us laughing everyday with their antics. They are both obedience trained, and doing very well. Was training a german shepard in my yard, decided to give her a rest. Started on one of my danes. As soon as the shepard saw all of the attention to the one dane, the temptation was too much, so she ran out to interfere. The other dane saw this and came out and chased her back to the porch so she wouln't bother us several times. This was a real suprise to me, wished some one had been around to witness this event. When I started with that Dane and put the otherone back on the porch, darned if the other dane didn't do the same thing. Finally the Shepard gave upi and went to sleep.

HI, In less then a weeks time I will be picking up my 8wk old Irish setter puppy. (I also have a 12yr old Shih Tzu.)My
problem is that I just can't think of a good name for this pup. She is from a line in Internation and National Champs;
and only seems proper to give her a proper name. Could someone out there give me a hand? I would prefer an Irish name. Thanks

Hello. I have 3 dogs, a 3 yr. old cho-chow/wolf/?? mix, a 2yr. old rotweiler/husky mix, and a 13 week old St. bernard/??. The latest addition is 24 lbs. currently. She is brindle-colored, and her nose is all black. It is pointier than a St. bernard's ussually is. I am trying to figure out what else she can be, as well as how big she will get. I can not find a guideline chart for puppy/dog weight. If you can help, please e-mail me at my address. Thanks. P.S. It was neat reading about everyone else's dogs!!

Have an 8 yr. old lab, blind since birth, a 3 yr. old lab and a 8 month old puppy who is becoming a bully! The blind guy yells at him when he's a pest, but the other dog isn't able to move without the new one biting, hard, on his neck & legs. When the middle dog stands up, it seems to trigger a biting instinct in the new one. And instead of defending himself, he just cries out. I yell at the new one but he's too far away to correct with collar. I want the 3 of them to be able to enjoy my (fenced in) woods but the middle guy can hardly take a step. Any suggestions?

Hi! I guess I've seen other people with the same question I have. I own a 10 weeks Sharpei. We have had him since 7 weeks old. I'm a little concern because he likes to bite everytime and I need to be constantly shouting at him to stop or take him out for him to stop. I have 3 & 5 year old boys and I'm concerned he could bite them and hurt them. Is this a common behavior of puppies? I'm getting him in a obedience class when he gets to be 12 weeks. I do not want to be tough on him if this is just part of him growing up and playin around. Anyone with similar experiences please email me. Thanks!

I have 3 Dogs a 5 yr old spayed female Labrador Retriever (Black) and a 4 Year old neutered Male Vizsla and an Eighteen month Female German Shorthaired Pointer. I am proud of all my kids and would not give them up for anything!!! I enjoy Bird Hunting Hunt Test, Obedience Competition and Breed Handling in Last place but most of all the companionship the dogs bring me is unsurpassed!!! I am a first time visitor to PetStation and enjoyed it very much. I will continue to visit this site often it could become just as addicting as solitaire. Keep up the good work. Thanks Julie

Hi!...My husband and I would like to share with you, our daughter Shilah. She is a collie-shepard mix who we rescued from the Humane Society three months ago. She is very loveable and very cute. She has recently graduated from the Basic Obedience Training and is a changed dog. We love her very much.

To help out BJ with the dog biting, we have recently taken our dog, a collie-shepard mix, to obedience school and the instructor told us that when she starts to bite, to say a word that you can stick with. We've used "enough" and she stops. Now we had to yell it at first but it worked. You should also stop whatever it was you were doing and just stay immobile. We have done it while we're playing with her and it is amazing at the change in her. This may or may not work for you but hopefully it will.

I have a six month old chocolate lab that we think is mixed with German Sheppard. She is constantly jumping and loves to bit us. At first we thought it was just because she was a puppy and had to work those baby teeth out but I think she has all her permanent teeth now but she still likes to bite us. How do we get her to stop biting all the time. She is not particulary fond of rawhide toys. Loves pigs ears but when they are gone she is back to chewing on us. Help!
